Why preparing for the Yakut winter is so important

Yakutia in winter is an amazing but harsh land. Temperatures can drop to −60°C and below, but that’s no reason to cancel the trip. With the right gear, you’ll feel warm and comfortable, and all your attention will be on stunning landscapes, ice caves, and unforgettable adventures. We, the Chuchuna team, have prepared a complete checklist based on years of experience organising winter tours.

Winter Yakutia — warm and comfortable with the right clothing

The three‑layer rule – your foundation

The secret lies in layering. Clothes shouldn’t generate heat themselves, but should retain your body heat and wick away moisture. Remember three layers:

  • Base layer (thermal underwear): synthetic or merino wool. The goal is to move moisture away from the skin. No cotton – it soaks up sweat and quickly turns cold.
  • Mid layer (insulation): a fleece jacket or a Polartec sweater. This layer traps heat.
  • Outer layer (protection): a membrane jacket and pants (Gore‑Tex or similar). They protect from wind and snow while letting out perspiration.

Head, hands and feet: what you absolutely need

The most heat is lost through uncovered parts. Pay special attention to:

  • Hat: warm, covering the ears, preferably with a fleece lining.
  • Scarf or buff: protects the face and neck. We recommend a fleece buff – it doesn’t get wet from your breath.
  • Mittens, not gloves: fingers warm each other. The best choice is down mittens or membrane mittens.
  • Footwear: high boots (valenki or unty) with insulation, 1–2 sizes larger to keep an air layer. Always use warm insoles and wool socks.
Yakut horses don’t fear the frost – and neither will you if you dress right

What else to pack in your backpack

  • Thermos with hot tea. The quickest way to warm up.
  • Rich face cream and lip balm. Protect against windburn.
  • Spare mittens and socks. If the first pair gets damp, you can change.
  • Power bank. Batteries drain much faster in the cold.
  • Sunglasses. Snow reflects up to 80% of ultraviolet light – your eyes need protection.
